A sadly flawed wonderful stone

I do not know which mine this stone came from but I wish I had more from there like this one. Unfortuantely it came out of the ground with the flaws seen in the photos. As you can see the back is a deeply under-cut back, and there is a crisp tight inclusion on the top that leads to the end and around onto the back. This inclusion follows the same angle that the missing piece does and this is a weak point in the stone that if dropped, this is where it would split. There is also an open crack that runs in one form or another around the belly of the stone, following the sediment layering. All of these faults demand that the stone be sealed on the back and the sides with a lacquer of come sort. Sealing the stone would certainly enhance the longivity of the stone.

The top surface displays a beautiful, complicated and very finely composed sumigashi or ink on floating water pattern created with black and red renge. Renge is found in suita stones and so my definition this is a suita. The su gas voids are so fine that they cannot be seen with an un-aided eye, the colored renge pattern is seen as a drifting fog pattern with the un-aided eye because the particles are so small.

I have honed several razors on this stone and found that it will produce a very fine smooth and comfortable shaving edge that gives a barber type shave. One test razor, a Henckels Friodur razor was taken directly from a 2,000 grit Shapton to this suita, using some circular strokes followed by 40 or so edge leading strokes, stropping then finishing with 12 weight of the razor water only strokes the edge was popping HHT 5s root in and root out. I also honed a Japanese Kikuboshi Sweedish steel razor and came away with the same results, althought it took more strokes on the stone and the strop.

I am offering this Air Raid Shelter Hoard stone as an As Is Product. Therefore I am voiding the Return Policy for this stone. The price is a reflection of the inclusion, the crack and the missing portion on the back.

A tested tomo nagura will be included with this suita.
