Funahiro Tenkei
Funahiro Tenkei kanna
Recent Funahiro 70mm shiange kanna.
An excellent example of a modern blacksmiths meld of old world techniques and boutique
steels. Funatsu Yuji-san of Yoita tailors special blended steels for his chisels and kanna
blades. This model, Tenkei, is reputed to contain old fashion carbon steel alloyed with
modern Swedish blue paper steel to create one of the most popular kanna blades in Japan
which happens to be very popular with the Kezurouki crowd.
The 70mm main blade is marked down the center Tenkei and to the left Genju Funahiro. The laminated sub blade is not marked but it does have the same peaceful restrained look as the main blade. The blades will need to be sharpened and flattened.
The full bodied white oak dai has itame grain and has a 3mm wide blade throat. The blade
chute has been adjusted so that the blade will slide down to within .5cm as hand tight and
very snug so the final fitting should not be too big of a deal. The sole is flat but will need to be conditioned to some degree.
